Abstract water reflections
Water reflections photography is popular but the usual images of beautiful scenery or buildings by a lake or river reflected on water are often a yawn to me. A lot of it are actually quite nice. But that's the trouble. There's a lot of it! This water reflections abstract image of a traffic light and trees was taken from a drain, well, a canal, along Bukit Timah Road in Singapore, near the National Junior College. I had gone there intending to take photographs of the old tress, decked with bird's nest ferns, on that long stretch of land between Bt Timah Road and Dunrean Road. But, as it turned out, the photographs of trees were not all that interesting. Then I spotted this image in the canal. I was struck by the clarity and brightness of the reflected image, as well as by the red traffic light, which added a point of interest.
I waited for the lights to turn red again and took one shot. Just one because, frankly, I did not the full potential of this as an abstract water-reflected image. In fact, I only saw the potential when I was putting together this series of abstract art photographs. Earlier, I had seen it, thought it looked quite nice, and tried some digital manipulation using Photoshop, but nothing great came out of it. I filed this water reflections image away. What made the difference this time around was just a simple crop, to remove a beam of concrete at the top of the image, showing just the water and its reflections. I am proud to say, this is one water reflections photograph that is not cliche, I hope ;-) |
