Sea shell pictures are normally of exotic shells. This is a different sort of unique sea shell photo. The shell itself is very ordinary, nothing much to look at.

But the photograph is somewhat special. It is a color photograph, yet it looks almost like a black and white picture, because of the white shell set against black sand. The marks on the sand, made by an earth digger, give this sea shell picture added interest.

This picture has special significance for me because of the place where it was taken.

As a child, my father would take the family swimming on weekends and I used to check the tide times in the newspapers, and wonder about a beach called Jasons Bay. So when I grew up, one day I went. Also called Sedili Kechil, Jasons Bay is several hours' drive away in Johor, Malaysia.

The tide was down that day and there was no opportunity to swim. But this sea shell picture made the trip worthwhile.

When I first posted this picture on my personal website some years ago, I decided to do a Google Search for Sedili Kechil and guess what I found – the first item listed was the Tide Table!

Never mind the sentimental reasons and the uncanny coincidence.

On its own, I still feel this is a special picture of sea shells – special because of its ordinariness. It is just an ordinary shell on an ordinary beach, whose sand surface had been scratched by an earth digger.

With the eye of a photographer, I was able to see the potential presented by this very ordinary picture of a sea shell. And I am proud of this fact.

Prints of this sea shell pictures are available for sale. Larger prints come in very limited editions, but smaller 5R and 8R prints are made very affordable to encourage the collection of fine art photographs by those with limited budgets.

All prints, including the affordable 5R and 8R prints, are signed by me, Richard Seah.
