Pictures of corn

I took this series of stil life pictures of corn in the mid-1990s, when I was producing my own newsletter on natural health, called The Good Life.

Baby corn is usually sold "naked", stripped of its protective outer leaves and with the corn silk removed. I was therefore much attracted one day when I went to the market and saw a bunch of them being sold whole.

I was struck by the fact that the corn silk seemed very long, extending way beyond the length of the corn cobs. I saw the potential for still life photography right away. I bought some.

When I brought them home and peeled off the outer leaves, I went "Wow!" The corn silk was, indeed, very long. The baby corn was like a young girl with long, sexy hair.

The set up for these pictures of corn was very simple. I placed the baby corn on a black t-shirt, put it on my table with the (late) morning sun shining in, and fired away.

At that time, I was living in a block of flats facing north east, and mine was a corner apartment that had the morning sun coming in at an angle. It was ideal for natural light still life photography and I rather miss not having that anymore.

My current apartment faces south and it is sandwiched between two others. I no longer have enough natural sunlight to do sill life photography at home.

I took quite a number of pictures of corn that morning, and my three best are shown on this page. All three are fine art photographs for sale.

The third in this pictures of corn series was taken against a beautiful glass plate. Again, the set up was very simple, just place by the window and shoot.

My more usual preference is what I call candid still life photography, where I simply photograph still life objects as they are, whether they are arranged by someone else or by nature. Prints of these pictures of corn are available for sale. Larger prints come in very limited editions, but smaller 5R and 8R prints are made very affordable to encourage the collection of fine art photographs by those with limited budgets.
