This picture representing loneliness seems to be a favourite among visitors to my website.

For one thing, a lot of people seem to reach my website by searching for "loneliness”. I guess there are lots of lonely people and, in their loneliness, they go to the Internet in search of pictures representing loneliness.

If you are one such person, well, I hope this photograph speaks to your soul but I also hope it does not make you feel more sad and lonely.

This is also the one picture that is most often "stolen” – that is, lifted without my permission and used on other websites, especially on blogs. So now I've decided to put an identification mark on it.

I can understand why many people like this picture. I like it a lot too.

To me, this is a powerful and very symbolic picture representing loneliness. The man is poor and crippled, an outcast of society. And it so happens that there are concentric circles on the floor, and he happens to be outside those circles.

I took this picture representing loneliness in Sydney, in the mid-1980s. If I remember correctly, it was somewhere behind the Sydney Opera House, or at least in the vicinity of the Sydney Opera House.

The original version of this picture representing loneliness was in color, taken on Kodachrome slide. It was taken in the evening, during autumn. The light was dull. But, in a way, it was fine, for it added to the bleakness and sadness of this picture.

But such is photography that pictures that appear dull are a bit hard to accept. So I did a bit of Photoshop adjustments to make it such that, even though the general tone is dull, there is still some liveliness in the colors.

The black and white version of this picture representing loneliness is digitally manipulated to convert from color to black and white. The effect is different but I would not say it is necessarily better and I still pretty much like the original color version.

Both versions, I feel, successfully captured and conveys the the extreme sadness of this picture representing loneliness.

I did an Internet search (on Google Images) for loneliness images and I dare boast that, after glancing through more than a hundred images of loneliness, I could not find more than a couple that truly depicted loneliness.

This picture of loneliness forms part of a series on candid portrait photography.

It is also part of another series that I call emotions. I don't have a lot of photographs in this series because emotions are hard to capture. You need to be at the right place at the right time, with your camera ready.
